 Session 1 (1 Strategic PDU):

The Non-Traditional Guide to Getting Started in Project Management

Are you brand new to project management? Or maybe you are looking to make a career change into project management? Either way, you are faced with the same question...how do I get experience in project management when every job requires a PMP certification? And it gets further complicated if you do not work in IT or construction. Fear not, there is a path into project management even if you do not have experience or do not work in the "traditional PM" fields. In this session, we will create a plan for you to get started in project management and equip you with the tools to support your growth.

Outcomes:
  1. How to find a non-traditional job that will be a foot in the door to earning experience in project management.
  2. How to develop core project management skills in a non-traditional role.
  3. How to find a mentor and why it will be the best career decision that you make.

Speaker:  Chris Thompson

 Chris Thompson

Chris Thompson is a Project Management Professional (PMP)® with 9 years of experience leading projects and teams in ecommerce, software development, web development, and marketing. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Project Management from Colorado Christian University. Chris loves Jesus, his wife Emily of 12 years, his two boys Henry (5) and Arthur (2), snowboarding, espresso, and J.R.R Tolkien.

Session 2 (1 Strategic PDU):

Transform Your Project Management Career

Most of us stumble into project management and have become successful at it by necessity rather than careful planning. But that doesn’t mean you can continue to be successful without taking care of your project management career. The problem is, no one really knows how to plan a project management career because project management doesn’t typically show up on any organizational chart or career roadmap. This presentation will help attendees understand where they’ve been, where they are in their career and how they and the organization of which they are an integral part can establish a credible and beneficial career management model that will benefit both.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn to take an objective look at your professional history and identify the key areas of Project Management competency
  2. Learn to understand the job market for project managers and what they mean to your career
  3. Learn how keep your job change strategy current and viable

Speaker: Kane Wai, MBA, PMP, CSM, Manager, Deloitte Consulting LLP
