Session 1 (1 PDU): Business & Strategic Management

If Only My Sponsor Were Smarter, I’d be a More Effective Project Manager

View Presentation Archive

Having never met your sponsor, I can’t say they’re not smart. (I’ll leave it to you to make the argument). But it’s safe to say they haven’t had anywhere near the same education and training on their sponsorship duties as you have had on your duties as a project manager. Yet their understanding of the roles and responsibilities of ‘Sponsor’ and ability to be an effective contributor has a profound effect on you, the team, and the success of the project

While we don’t have the ability to choose our sponsor, we do have opportunities to increase our sponsor’s understanding of their responsibilities through the course of the project. This workshop will provide participants with specific strategies for improving the effectiveness of their sponsor’s involvement. Areas to be addressed include estimation, risk management, change control, and project governance.

Session 2 (1 PDU): Leadership

The Project Leadership Enigma

View Presentation Archive

You’ve read the top leadership books and have listened to a multitude of outstanding keynote speakers. You’re working on cultivating the charisma of a John Kennedy, the determination of a Sir Ernest Shackleton, and the motivational talent of a Greg Popovich, but are not quite there yet. You know that it would be easier to take your project from good to great if you were the company’s CEO, but that’s not likely to happen during this sprint. Somehow the books’ and speakers’ leadership lessons just don’t seem to behelpful in your current project environment. So how do we resolve the project leadership enigma and apply our leadership skills to a project right now?

Providing leadership at the project level is a trial we all face. This presentation will address the unique challenges of leadership confronting the project manager. We will examine some common leadership theories, their shortcomings in the project environment, and identify ways we can adapt them to make us more effective project leaders.
